IT IS SAID that a mighty sultan once asked his advisor to inscribe something on his ring, words that would lift his spirits in times of distress and ground him in times of joy.
The inscription read: “This too shall pass.”
Such few words, yet they carry profound truth. They remind us of the fleeting nature of this world. Life is nothing but a series of moments, some filled with intense joy, others with deep sorrow.
Ease fades into hardship. Hardship gives way to ease. Indeed, how could we ever truly appreciate one without experiencing the other?
Just as the sunrise marks the beginning of a day and the sunset brings it to a close, so too does life alternate between light and darkness, ease and difficulty. This is the sunnah of Allah, the design of this worldly life.
But the next life? It is just a blink away.
For those who believe and do righteous deeds, there lies a promise: a life of eternal peace in the presence of Allah, by His Mercy, with those we yearn to be reunited with.
The Prophet ﷺ said that when the people of Paradise enter Jannah, a caller will announce: “You shall live and never die; You shall be healthy and never fall ill; You shall remain young and never grow old; You shall dwell in everlasting delight and never suffer.” And then the words of Allah Most High:
وَتِلْكَ الْجَنَّةُ الَّتِي أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
“This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit because of the deeds you used to do.“ (az-Zukhruf 72)
